How to Prevent Common Foot Problems on Dancers
The feet are a dancer most prized physical asset and should be properly cared for. There are numerous problems which can arise with a dancer feet which can hinder their progress and even end their career. Knowing how to prevent, identify and correct problems or potential problems gives the dancer an edge in their field and will lead to a more enjoyable dancing experience.
One of the most common foot problems that dancer face is cracking and splitting.
This can occur for two reasons. One, the feet are not properly moisturized and dry out. Dry skin on any part of the body has a tendency to crack and split. However, a dancer feet are put through particularly rough abuse, so if they are dry then damage can occur more easily. This can be remedied by keeping the feet properly moisturized.
Two, the feet are not sufficiently dried after practice, or after washing. When the feet are moist, the skin becomes soft and has a tendency to tear while performing dance movements. If splitting occurs, applying petroleum jelly or lotion and then taping over the affected area will help it to heal. Excessively moist skin can be avoided by changing socks during long practices, or by thoroughly drying the feet after washings.
Blisters are another common occurrence when dancer first begin,
change to a new pair of shoes, or begin dancing barefoot. Adding moleskin padding to a new pair of shoes in the heal and toe areas can help to prevent blisters from forming. You can tape the toes when beginning to dance barefoot to help to reduce blisters until calluses form.
Calluses are common formations on the feet of dancer, but this thickening of the skin is good as it protects the dancer feet. Normally, they are not a concern unless they become overgrown which can be painful and keep shoes from fitting correctly. To keep calluses contained, consider using a pumice stone when bathing to sand off excessive buildup.
A dancer might also form bunions. Quite often these formations are hereditary, but they can also be formed by improper dance techniques. A dancer that doesnt distribute their body weight evenly on the foot, but instead consistently executes dance moves by placing that weight onto their toes may develop a bunion. This can be prevented by exercising proper dance technique. Spacers or taping the toes can assist in adjusting this positional problem.
Remember that as a dancer, your feet are your most valued asset, and taking proper care of them can keep you from experiencing many problems that can adversely affect your performance.
